MEMBERS OF | IEE CORPS OF ROYAL CANADIAN ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERS CLOSE-OFF DATE JUNE 9.4
HOREVORD
The idea for this Membership List originated in the spring of 1960 vith Colonel RA Campbell, OBE, CD, Director of The Corps of Royal Canadian Electri- cal Engineers from 1957-1962,
Influenced by the British, vho after many studies had finally grouped the bulk of the electri- cal and mechanical engineering of their army into a new corps called Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), the Canadian Military Headquarters in London, England, on 11 Jan 1943, placed the bulk of its electrical and mechanical engineering into the
engineering or "E" Side of The Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps (RCOC(E)).
Pinally, after much Study and pressure, both internal and external, the corps of Canadian Electri- cal and Mechanical Engineers (CEME) was organized on 24 Feb 1944, effective l Feb 44, and the first trans- ference of units to RCEME - the Corps being granted the designation "Royal" on 20 Apr - vas made on 15 May
44, this date being celebrated as the official birth- day. |
The Corps was redesignated The Corps of Royal ` Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers with the Sane abbreviation on 13 Apr 53
Colonel Campbell's direction was that the Membership List should include the names of ali the
officers and men who served in RCOC(E) and RCEME units.
Unfortunately the official wartime records of The Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps did not distinguish
between RCOC and RCOC(E) personnel. According to the
War Service Records Division of the Department of Veterans" Affairs who offered their full cooperation on this project, a listing of wartime RCOC personnel Vas not available because of the deterioration from age of the Hollerith punch cards.
The only recourse was to read all the Part 2 Orders of the RCEME units but this work could not

with Volume 11. Major VB Loggie, RCAPC, CD, Officer- in-charge of the Data Processing Section of No 1 Army Pay Ledger Unit (1 APLU) at National Defence Head- quarters arranged for a run-off of all the RCEME per- sonnel from their records. This alphabetical listing is in two parts; officers and men.(2)
Volume I was started in 1964 when Colonel Campbell's successor, Colonel A Mendelsohn, CD (1) made Mrs Marion Lachance available as my assistant. The success of this volume is a reflection of her love and dedication for detail and accuracy. patient- iy she prepared index cards on shich she recorded the regimental particulars for each name she read in the Part 2 Orders after first screening Volume II to see if they were previously recorded. She accumulated almost thirteen thousand names in her index.
The main sources Of information were the Part 2 Orders in the RCEME Mar Diaries for May 1944 and the following six months. It was here that she picked up the transfers from RCOC(E) to RCEME.
Part 2 Orders missing from the RCEME Diaries were made available by the War Service Records Divi- sion of the Department of Veterans' Affairs by the kindness of Mr TA Murray, thc Division Supervisor, and with the patience of Miss J Dignard of his staff.
The list of officers in this volume were sup- plied almost entirely from the personal papers of Colonel RA Campbell vho, after the Nar, compiled a complete list of officers who had served in The Corps to be used as a potential membership list for the RCEME Corps Association.
Neither volume records transfers of personnel out of The Corps. Their names, because of the system, are lost.
Volume 1 contains, in addition to the alpha- betical listings of the officers and men, two addi- tional sections by the kindness and cooperation of Gaptain HW Holgate, RCASC, CD, in charge of the Direc- torate of Army Per onnel"s Honours and Awards Sectione These are the Honour Roli and the list of Honours and Awards granted to personnel of The Corps. The latter list has been enlarged by names appearing in the War Diary Part 2 Orders. |

Because Volumel is recorded on ninety column punch cards and Volume II is recorded on eighty column cards, it has been impossible to coliate the data of
the two volumes.
Volume I could not have been completed in its present form without the kind permission of Captain RJ Dunham, RCOC, CD, Automatic Data Processing Officer for 27 Central Ordnance Depot, London, Ontario. My personal thanks are extended to WO2 OAA Smith, RCOC, CD, Tabulating Room Supervisor; Miss AM Beames, Super- visor of the Key Punch Section, and her staff- Mrs B Burleigh, Mrs ME DePapp, Miss PB Harris, Mrs LJ Lamond, Mrs E Pollock and Mrs M Pyke - who converted Marion Lachance"s research into punch cards, Mrs IHS Cookman and Mrs I Maier of the Sorter Section; and Mrs FH Beemer who operated the UNIVAC 1004.
